Each set of quests is punctuated by a short five-a-side match or two, or a one-on-one (really two-on-two including the goalkeepers) match, against a selected opponent. Soccer Story is primarily about undertaking quests, first to form a team of five players, then to find opponents within each of the four regions, play a short cup, and progress to the next region. My big gripe is how hot and cold it is – and by cold, I mean downright frigid, to the point of being frostbitten. Of course, don’t expect the plot to leave you pondering life’s true meaning by the credits, but it’ll provide something tangible to chew.
The core premise of the journey is steeped in silliness, with Futbol being banned from the ironically named Soccertown. Grab up to 3 friends, and convince them that soccer is the ultimate sport by challenging them to local multiplayer matches! A great Final match led to a ‘calamity’ and football being banned in the world your plucky hero (you can choose between twins) lost their father in the process but wants to bring football back. The evil ‘Soccer Inc.’ is a rather clunky satire of FIFA that wants to own and control football, or soccer if you prefer. The overall story of Soccer Story is charming, albeit it’s not particularly creative or surprising. The answer? Yes, it does, albeit with some caveats. The question then becomes whether Soccer Story has enough of its own ideas, and quality of execution, to become a worthy addition to this subgenre of pixel-based comedic sporting adventures.
